Threading the needle with Angela Jones
For nearly 25 years, Québec designer Angela Jones has been creating her magnificent swimsuit lines and ladies everywhere have been going crazy over them.
Born in Caraquet, New Brunswick, Ms. Jones worked as a nurse at Québec’s Saint-Sacrement Hospital for a number of years. The idea of trading syringe needles for sewing needles came to her on a winter’s day, while she was shopping for a bathing suit in a local store while preparing for a trip to an exotic southern beach. Right then, the interest in swimsuits became a passion.
In 1983, Ms. Jones began making and selling her own swimsuit creations in her Lévis workshop. Well surrounded and seeing the constant increase in demand, she opened her first shop in Place Laurier in 1984. Following this store’s success, Melissa Jones, Ms. Jones’s daughter, decided to join the family company and a new Angela Jones shop opened in Montreal in 2002. The positive response is immediate and the Angela Jones brand becomes known throughout the province and soon after, two more shops open, one at Place Sainte-Foy in Québec and the other at Centre Rockland in Montreal.
When purchasing a swimsuit, very few women are content with so-called “standard” sizes. With that in mind, Angela Jones decided to pay close attention to her customers and to offer a custom adjustment service. This brilliant idea, which few competitors can boast, shows the designer’s attention to detail and level of caring towards her customers.
For the past 16 years, Ms. Jones has been buying all her fabrics in Italy and Spain. She wants nothing but the highest quality in terms of fabrics, design, creation as well as all the little attentions that women deserve. She oversees, from the designs to the creation and virtually every step in between.
Several major names in Québec show business appear amongst her loyal customers, including actress Sohie Prégent, TV personality Danièle Ouimet and singers Caroline Néron and Marie-Chantale Toupin.
For the summer of 2009, the trend for Angela Jones leans towards ultra bright colours, such as reed, turquoise, pink and burnt orange. These are all lively colours that give women an instantly-tanned look. And bikinis are also coming back in full force.
