Say « OUI ! » to Québec products

Summer is finally here, ushering in the season of terraces, pools, barbecues and even weddings.  So why not take this opportunity to discover and enjoy Québec wines?

Let’s start with a bit of the bubbly, but replacing grapes with local Geneva apples.  Cidrerie Michel Jodoin, a Rougemont-based cider mill offers its 2008 pink cider (# 733394, $18.75 at the SAQ, Québec’s Liquor Board), a fabulous aperitif that also goes great with a brunch.  Orangey pink in colour and medium-dry, this cider boasts a medium nose exuding floral and fruity aromas. On the palate, its lively acidity and broad texture precede a medium finish.

Domaine Les Brome presents Cuvée Charlotte (#11106661, $16.70 at the SAQ) a white wine made in Québec from 80% Seyval, 15% Geisenheim and 5% Chardonnay. Seyval is the most cultivated type of grape in Canada.   It is also grown in other parts of the world, where it is mistakenly called “Sauvignon blanc”.  Geishenheim (a hybrid developed in Germany) is a cross between of vitris riparia and Riesling.  As for Chardonnay, one of the best known white vines in the world, it is named after a French commune in Saône-et-Loire.  It is commonly used to make some of the finest wines, champagnes and even sweeter wines.  Cuvée Charlotte has notes that are floral (iris), mineral and slightly woodsy (mushrooms, ferns). Full-bodied in the mouth with a certain liveliness, it confirms the bouquet while adding a hint of pear and tangerine.  It accompanies well the seafood, lobster, poultry, white grilled fish (BBQ) and certain soft cheeses.

These wines and many more fantastic Québec products are available at the SAQ du Terroir d’Ici, at the Fairmont Le Château Frontenac.

Enjoy the summer and our fine wines!
